Nursing student involved in student government, starts Latinos Unidos Club at Gateway

Berenice Lorenzo says Gateway’s Nursing program and the college’s resources and programs are a perfect fit for what she needs as a student to thrive at college and enter her career.

Berenice says she knew from a young age that she wanted to go to college. While enrolling at Gateway, she pondered her career choice — and realized what she liked doing best was working with others.

“I love helping people, and I thought that Nursing would be a great career for me.”

Berenice has been recognized as the Kenosha Campus Ambassador, meaning she is the voice for students on the Kenosha Campus to the community and administration. She also was one of the students to start the Latinos Unidos club at the college and is in United Student Government.

“I think you become more involved in your studies, and you meet new people to make those meaningful connections of friendship and people in your career field you will connect with once you enter the workforce.”

Berenice has started on her General Education courses and began her Nursing-focused courses in Fall 2020.

Berenice says she’s been helped by the college’s student support resources in a couple different ways already.

“I’ve used every resource Gateway has – tutoring, the library and others. It has all helped me. Gateway’s resources like tutoring have helped me to increase my grades and keep me motivated.

“I’ve also used the library at Gateway a number of ways — the computers, a place for a study session with my friends, printing access. It’s been helpful to me.”
