The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to receive college credit for what a student already knows. CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program, with 33 exams and hundreds of examination sites, including the testing center on our Kenosha campus location, serving as a site for both Gateway students and the public.
To receive proficiency credit for your CLEP test
- To receive proficiency college credit, a student must be accepted into an associate degree, technical diploma, certificate or apprenticeship program offered by Gateway.
- Student must submit an official (unopened) CLEP test score directly from College Board to Gateway Technical College.
- A minimum score of 50 is required on all accepted CLEP listed on the table linked below.

Fees
CLEP exams have TWO separate fees:
- The nonrefundable testing center charge is $24.00 per test and MUST be PREPAID to ensure that a testing station will be reserved for you on the day of your CLEP examination. Fee must be paid no later than 24 hours in advance of the testing date as you will not be confirmed as an examinee for that date UNTIL this fee is prepaid.
- The CLEP testing fee is $95.00 per test whether you pass or fail. This fee will be paid to CollegeBoard at the time of your online CLEP registration.

Registration Process
For Gateway Technical College Students
- Email CFPL@gtc.edu. Provide your name, student ID #, and which CLEP test(s) you wish to take.
- We will email you the link to the CLEP - CFPL registration form. Log in using your MyGateway login and submit.
- Once approved, we will email you the next steps to schedule your appointment.
- After you have your test scheduled, you must prepay the $24 testing center fee at least a day before your appointment by visiting any campus Student Services Center (Racine, Kenosha, Elkhorn) or call the contact center to pay over the phone 1-800-247-7122.
- Go to the College Board website to purchase your CLEP exam. Print your exam voucher.
- Bring a valid government issued photo ID and your CLEP test voucher with you to your appointment.
For Non- Gateway Technical College Students
- Contact the Kenosha testing center at 262-564-2532 or 262-564-2566, to schedule a date and time for your test.
- Call the contact center to pay your $24 testing fee over the phone: 1-800-247-7122.
- Go to the College Board website to purchase your CLEP exam. Print your exam voucher.
- Bring a valid government issued photo ID and your CLEP test voucher with you on test day.
Testing Accommodations at Gateway Technical College
Gateway Technical College is committed to assisting the academic needs of every learner to ensure scholastic excellence is achieved and maintained. Whether you are a current Gateway student or not, all learners participating in test taking through a Gateway Testing Services Center are able to work with campus Student Accommodations and Accessibility Services to establish reasonable accommodations. Please contact DSS well before your scheduled exam so your accommodations can be applied, and ready for you on test day. Should you arrive to testing services without first contacting DSS and require accommodations, testing services cannot make accommodations on the spot, and without approval from DSS. A test reschedule will be required.
CFPL Refund Policy
If you are currently in the course you wish to test out of, be aware the course refund policy is calculated using the first day of the course. You have 30 calendar days on courses running 15-16 weeks, and 7 calendar days on courses running 3-4 weeks, to complete your CLEP test and receive a 100% tuition refund.
