While attending classes at a local four-year university, Amy Brewer decided she needed to make a change before she got too far into her program – and too deep into debt.
“I realized I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. So, I left the college and enrolled in Gateway’s Administrative Professional associate degree program. I figured I could take my core classes there and save some money while I figured out exactly what I wanted to pursue.”
In addition to saving her time and money, Gateway’s program was offered online – something that was really important to Amy at that point in her life.
“I wanted to work and go to school at the same time. Gateway’s program allowed me to do that. I was able to learn on my schedule and continue my job,” Amy said.
“Except for a couple projects that required collaborative team work where I had to meet other students on campus, my courses were self-paced with checkpoints along the way. I could do them on my own time, around my work schedule.”
In addition to liking the online format, Amy also enjoyed her instructors and classes, saying, “They were very approachable and friendly. They were not intimidating and we’re open and available to help with classes.”
Her coursework, which included learning about Microsoft programs, record management, filing paperwork and other clerical duties, paired with Gateway’s knowledgeable faculty, set her up well for future endeavors too.
After completing her degree at Gateway, Amy transferred her college credits to the local four-year university she originally started at and has since earned her Business Management bachelor’s degree.
Today, she is thriving in her career. She works as executive administrative assistant – a position she was recently promoted to – and is applying all the skills she’s learned throughout her educational journey at Gateway.
