Gateway’s family atmosphere helps students, staff
Ken Riley, coordinator of Gateway Technical College’s Promise program, says of all of Gateway’s strengths, it’s the internal components that make it excellent.
“I think the culture is what makes Gateway great,” says Riley. “It's a family atmosphere. We care for one another and our students.”
Riley works closely with students, helping connect them with the financial and student support resources they need to succeed. For some, it means they’re able to attend college, something they thought impossible prior to being selected for the Promise program.
Riley’s also a sounding board and adviser for the many students who’ve gone through – and are currently participating in – the program.
His philosophy? Provide the means for students to choose their goals and future.
“My personal philosophy is to create life-changing opportunities for the people in our communities,” said Riley. “Those connections can be made anywhere and anytime – you can even change someone's life through a simple conversation. I’ve seen it happen – and done it – myself.”
Riley says education is so important today because the skills to be gained are the key to succeed in today’s world.
“When a student obtains a college degree or certificate, they’re telling employers that they have the hard skills as well as the soft skills to join the workforce,” said Riley. “A college degree or certificate allows you to increase your earning potential. You will also have the opportunity to grow within your organization.”
