Medical Assistant student Leslie Fonseca began her journey at Gateway because of family ties. In the end, the college became like a family to Leslie, as staff and students all worked together to help her succeed.
"One of my sisters started at Gateway, which is why I came too. It's close to home. It's economical. And I thought those factors made it worth trying out.
"Gateway has been a really good college. Everyone here, from the faculty to the staff, just wants the best for the students. That's made my experience here great."
In her time at Gateway, Leslie has tried out a few programs, giving her the insight to choose the perfect one.
"I started in the Nursing program, moved to Business Management, went back to Nursing and then I settled on the Medical Assistant program," says Leslie.
"I've always had a heart for the health care field. A medical assistant career feels like the best fit for me because of extra room for work-life balance, but it also allows me to work with people and help people – which is something that I’ve always wanted to do."
Gateway's Medical Assistant technical diploma program is giving her the knowledge and technical skills to build a career upon graduation, and Gateway's faculty are giving her the support she needs to make that career dream a reality.
"This program has been really good. I love the technology we’re working with, gaining hands-on skills, and the faculty this semester are the best I've ever had. They’re very encouraging and helpful. If I need anything, I know I can reach out to them. And whether a student is going through something professionally or personally, knowing that I have that support is reassuring," says Leslie
"The faculty seem to have a story that goes with every chapter we’re working on. They tell us about their time in the professional world, and I like to hear those because it gives me a little perspective of what this job might look like when I graduate."
Gaining knowledge, skills and perspective have helped Leslie envision the exact career that will fit her best.
"When I graduate, I hope to find work in a clinic or hospital setting, specifically in pediatrics or family medicine. That’s where my passion lies."
