The Lakeview Technology Academy team of Sacred Sombreros captured the top position at Gateway Technical College’s annual SumoBot competition held May 3 at the college’s SC Johnson integrated Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Center in Sturtevant.
Sacred Sombreros team members also took first place in the Speed and Agility category on its way to beating out more than 350 other student competitors.
“The annual Sumo Bot competition gives students a real-world engineering design challenge,” says Pat Hoppe, Engineering division chairman. “They utilize all aspects of science, technology, engineering and math – STEM – throughout the design process.”
Students and their robots competed in four events: Presentation and Documentation, Timed Task, Speed and Agility and SumoBot wrestling.
