Five Gateway Technical College students took home first-place honors at the Business Professionals of America-Wisconsin Association’s state spring leadership conference Feb. 19-Feb. 21 at Lakeshore Technical College.
All five students who competed for the Gateway-Elkhorn Campus chapter took home first-place honors, spanning four events:
- Holly Anderson (Waterford), Presentation Management Team
- Tanya Galvan (Burlington), Human Resource Management
- Erica Pitner (Burlington), Entrepreneurship
- Greg Pitner (Rochester), Presentation Management Team
- Sheryl Pitner (Rochester), Advanced Office Systems and Procedures and Presentation Management Team
All five qualify to participate in the national BPA competition to be held in Anaheim, Calif.
Several also took home second- or third-place honors, as well. Galvan took second in Entrepreneurship and Presentation Management Team; Erica Pitner took second in Business Meeting and Presentation Management Team; Anderson took third in Ethics and Professionalism; and Sheryl Pitner placed third in Advanced Word Processing Skills.
Sheryl Pitner also won a Mike Tokheim Scholarship of $200.
The five took home a total of 21 awards, many in the top 10. Those include Anderson taking fourth in Human Resource Management and fifth in Advanced Interview Skills; Erica Pitner took fourth in Interview Skills and ninth in Ethics and Professionalism; Greg Pitner 10th in Ethics and Professionalism as well as Human Resource Management.
At the state event, students competed in the areas of information technology, accounting and administrative professional skills. Additionally, students had the opportunity to compete in interview skills and public speaking. Students were judged by industry professionals who are able to also share their expertise with students.
BPA is the national career/technical student organization for students preparing for careers in the business field.
