Gateway Technical College will host Harvest Fair, noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 on its Racine Campus, an event that will offer hands-on garden, food and other environmental demonstrations as well as fun activities for children.

Admission to the event is free. It will be held in the park in front of the Racine Campus, 1001 S. Main St., and a free gift will be handed out to attendees. For more information, go to gtc.edu/harvest.

“Harvest Fair is a free family event designed to educate about locally and organically grown food and environmental sustainability as well as experience autumn along the shore of beautiful Lake Michigan,” says Racine Dean of Campus Affairs Ray Koukari.

Areas of the event include:

Children’s activities area

  • Pumpkin decorating.  The first 100 children will be given a small pumpkin to decorate and take home.
  • Free, original carving templates will be provided for children to take home.
  • Pumpkin bowling.  Children will use pumpkins as bowling balls in this fun bowling game.

Demonstrations and workshops

Visitors will be provided opportunities to learn about:

  • gardening
  • urban farming
  • food preservation
  • juicing
  • composting
  • fresh water in the community
  • infusing more “green living” into the home

Live music

The regional band Folkswagon will perform.

Several environmental and “green” informational and vendor booths will be set up, as well.
